Herbs, spices and other plant materials are rich in phytochemicals and are important ingredients in medicine and nutritional products. Ultrasound treatment disrupts cell structures and releases bioactive compounds -- thus increasing yields and speeding up extraction. As a non-thermal process, ultrasonic treatment is a mild extraction technique that prevents thermal degradation of extracts.

What is an ultrasonic liquid processor?

Ultrasonic liquid processor, commonly referred to as "sonicators," disrupt tissues and cells through cavitation and ultrasonic waves.  Basically, an ultrasonic homogenizer has a tip which very rapidly vibrates, causing bubbles in the surrounding solution to rapidly form and collapse.  This creates shear and shock waves which tear apart cells and particles.

Ultrasonic sonicators are great for breaking apart cells and subcellular structures in suspension.  They are not good for homogenizing intact tissue.  Other applications include creating emulsions, dispersing nanoparticles, and reducing the size of particles in suspension.  Sonicators generate a significant amount of heat so they may not work well with temperature-sensitive samples.

How does an ultrasonic liquid processor work?

An ultrasonic liquid processor is a type of blending equipment that uses high frequency sound waves to generate intense cavitation. Cavitation is the formation and collapse of microscopic bubbles in a liquid. When cavitation occurs in an ultrasonic homogenizer, it creates a powerful shearing force that can break down particles, emulsify liquids, and create stable dispersions.

What are the benefits of using an ultrasonic homogenizer for herbs?

Ultrasonic extraction is a superior technique to produce high-quality extracts from herbs and spices that contain bioactive compounds. The advantages of ultrasonic extraction are very high yields, rapid extraction and undamaged bioactive compounds. Ultrasound-assisted extraction can break chemical bonding of compounds and destroy intra and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. This technique has been used to extract bioactive compounds from plants.
