The dispersion and depolymerization of ultrasonic wave are the result of ultrasonic cavitation.

When the liquid is treated with high intensity ultrasonic wave, the propagation of sound wave into the liquid medium will lead to alternating cycle of high pressure (compression) and low pressure (reflection), depending on the frequency. In the process of low-pressure circulation, high-intensity ultrasound will produce small vacuum bubbles or voids in the liquid.

When the bubble reaches a size that cannot absorb energy, it will collapse violently in the high pressure cycle. This phenomenon is called cavitation. During the burst, a very high temperature (about 5000K) and pressure (about 2000atm) were achieved locally.

The breakup of cavitation bubbles also leads to the liquid jet velocity up to 280m / s.

The cavitation force produced by cavitation bubbles in the process of instantaneous collapse is very important, and it is known that it can cause many chemical and physical effects [1], such as the formation of free radicals due to the cracking of solvent molecules, the increase of chemical reaction rate and mechanical effects (such as corrosion).
